ORTHODOX CHURCH OF ARCHANGEL MICHAEL AND SAINT PIRAN |
Brief History: Replacing an earlier building c1850, the present one dates from 1886 and is typical of the small rural Methodist chapels to be found in Cornwall at that time. Unused and dilapidated, it was first rented for Orthodox services in 1994, then bought in 1995. English Heritage agreed to support a complete restoration and with large and small contributions from many other supporters this work was carried out in 2000. The narthex was added in 2005. Unless circumstances change there is no possibility of further building since the adjoining land is privately owned and in commercial use.

The Community bears the title of the Patrons of Cornwall and the Cornish people – Archangel Michael and Saint Piran.
The feast day in respect of Archangel Michael is September 5th – the Commemoration of Miracles at Chonae (plunging), not far from Hierapolis in Phrygia.
The feast day for Saint Piran is March 5th. It is believed that Piran came from Ireland in the 5th Century and, passing through parts of Wales, proclaimed the Gospel of Christ in Cornwall before crossing to Brittany. There are churches bearing his name in all three of those countries. Perhaps the most notable is his Oratory, sadly covered by sand among the dunes of Perranzabuloe (Piran-in-the-Sands).As in so many cases, his relics were moved from place to place and their whereabouts is now unknown. He went to his rest c480.
