About Us
Our Community of Archangel Michael and Holy Piran
is within the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain,
an Exarchate of the Oecumenical Throne, and therefore at a local level welcomes all of the Orthodox Diaspora, being home not only to British people but to Orthodox Christians of different nationalities, cultures and countries, welcoming non-Orthodox visitors and enquirers.
Our local Community came into being following approaches in the early 1990s by Orthodox of the Greek tradition, in Cornwall. Father Gregory Palamas Carpenter from Plymouth established contacts, and began to exercise a pastoral ministry of visiting, blessing homes, etc., and in the course of time requests were made for an occasional Divine Liturgy. In 1994 Father Nikitas (then Constantine) Lantsbery and Presbytera Mary moved to Truro and together with Father Gregory arranged for Divine Liturgy to be served on Saturdays from time to time in Church of England churches. Those contacts and services were initially with just a small number of ex-patriate Greeks and interested non-Orthodox with first intentions being to serve permanently resident or temporarily resident Greeks but with no sense of exclusion or for that matter of growth as a “Parish”.
However, an opportunity arose in late 1994 enabling that small number to have the use of a place of worship which they could call their own, at least by renting what was a delapidated and dis-used Methodist chapel. With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios, rented in 1995 the little chapel was bought in 1996 and after complete restoration in 2000 under the direction of English Heritage, a Narthex was added in 2005.
